Our Mission - The mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
¶ 120. The Mission | The United Methodist Book of Discipline
¶ 121. Rationale for Our Mission—The mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world by proclaiming the good news of God's grace and by exemplifying Jesus' command to love God and neighbor, thus seeking the fulfillment of God's reign and realm in the world. The fulfillment of God's reign and realm in the world is the vision Scripture holds before us. The United Methodist Church affirms that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Savior of the world, and the Lord of all. As we make disciples, we respect persons of all religious faiths and we defend religious freedom for all persons. Jesus' words in Matthew provide the Church with our mission: "Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I've commanded you" (28:19-20), and "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, and with all your mind. . . . You must love your neighbor as you love yourself" (22:37, 39).
This mission is our grace-filled response to the Reign of God in the world announced by Jesus. God's grace is active everywhere, at all times, carrying out this purpose as revealed in the Bible. It is expressed in God's covenant with Abraham and Sarah, in the Exodus of Israel from Egypt, and in the ministry of the prophets. It is fully embodied in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is experienced in the ongoing creation of a new people by the Holy Spirit.
John Wesley, Phillip Otterbein, Jacob Albright, and our other spiritual forebears understood this mission in this way. Whenever United Methodism has had a clear sense of mission, God has used our Church to save persons, heal relationships, transform social structures, and spread scriptural holiness, thereby changing the world. In order to be truly alive, we embrace Jesus' mandate to love God and to love our neighbor and to make disciples of all peoples.
Mission & Ministry Area Highlights
The NWTX missions and ministries served in several different ways, from volunteering in missions to ministries for different age groups to intercultural ministries to local and global mission programs. There was always a need and always a team ready to serve.
-
United Women in Faith
The United Women in Faith, formerly United Methodist Women, was a leading ministry group for the Northwest Texas Conference. Their continued commitment to justice, equality, environmental advances and the support of children, youth and those in need continues to be a strong central point of their ministry. A part of the larger connection, they were able to make a strong impact for the United Methodist Church across northwest Texas.
-
Rural & County Seed Church Ministry
The Northwest Texas Conference was filled with churches and communities of all sizes. Several of the churches were planted in rural towns and county seed communities. Even though some of these communities were based in smaller populations, their ministry was still grand and very impactful for those communities. Our county seed church and communities were some of our strongest and most connected church communities.
-
Hispanic/Latino Movement
The Hispanic/Latino Movement of the Northwest Texas Conference was a thriving ministry across the area. Under the direction of Rev. Dr. Jorge Ochoa, this ministry focused on launching new churches and cell groups and grew rapidly in building strong connections with the first and second generations of Hispanic/Latino communities. They held several events and festivals throughout the years to reach those in the local communities and celebrate the ministry of the movement.
-
Volunteer in Mission
Volunteer in Mission (VIM) offered a framework through which disciples can engage in short-term missions locally, nationally, and globally. Tens of thousands of United Methodists engaged in short-term missions each year in ministries as varied as disaster response, community development, pastor training, microenterprise, agriculture, Vacation Bible School, building repair and construction, and medical/dental services. There was a place for everyone to serve.
-
Disaster Response
Disaster Response teams were ready to serve in several different ways. From local to traveling across the state, country, or the world, UMCOR and Early Response Teams stayed prepared to go where needed. From UMCOR kits to ERT training, there were people ready to serve.
-
Youth Camping Programs
Ceta Canyon Camp and Butman Methodist Camp were two ministry camp grounds within the Northwest Texas Conference that hosted thousands of children, youth and adults over decades of ministry. From summer camps to church retreat to Emmaus walks, these camp sites were a strong ministry of the Northwest Texas Conference. Currently, both camp sites are independent ministries but continue to host and develop continued ministry relationships with local United Methodist Churches and other denominations.
UMCOR
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), a unit of Global Ministries, is a humanitarian organization that helps alleviate human suffering, one of the two main goals of Global Ministries. Originally founded in 1940 in response to displaced and vulnerable populations in the wake of World War II, UMCOR assists the most vulnerable people affected by crisis or chronic need without regard to their race, religion or status. UMCOR’s work is carried out by providing relief and assistance in response to natural and human-made disasters and supporting programs in the areas of migration, health, food security and environmental sustainability.
